google search and the destruction of the public world

this talk of google changing information is a gross understatement. it is obliterating the very ground of a shared world. the search box does not present facts; it curates individual realities, trapping each of us in a curated echo of what we already believe or what the algorithm thinks we want. how can we possibly deliberate, argue, or act in concert when we no longer share a common field of reference? when information is personalized to this extent, it ceases to be a basis for public discourse and becomes merely another tool for private consumption. this fragmentation is not benign. it is a deliberate assault on the public sphere, making collective responsibility impossible and fostering a dangerous solitude where real political action withers and dies.
