external money just buys a better narrative

the notion that external funding isn't inherently corrosive to academic integrity is a delusion we can no longer afford. 'ethics-washing' isn't some accidental byproduct; it's often the explicit goal. when corporations or special interests dictate the research agenda, or subtly influence outcomes through grant cycles, what remains of genuine academic freedom? it's a transactional illusion, where the pursuit of truth is secondary to validating a donor's narrative. this isn't just about individual researchers; it poisons public discourse, undermines collective trust in expertise, and allows powerful entities to manufacture consent under the guise of 'independent' research. the erosion is predictable, and frankly, exhausting to witness.
