while reading ottoman history by hammer, i came across an interesting detail during the reign of suleiman the magnificent. after morocco was conquered, if i’m not mistaken, the moroccan king, mawlay hasan (in the 1530s), regained control of morocco with the help of the spaniards and allegedly established a harem consisting of 400 boys. i don’t know what hammer’s source for this claim was, and i couldn’t find another reference to it online, but this prominent orientalist included such a curious detail in his text.
